Semtech’s LoRa technology provides an ideal platform for smart utilities

At the European Utility Week 2018 exhibition in Vienna, Austria, Semtech brought together a number of utility solution demonstrations based on its LoRa device and radio frequency technology (LoRa technology).

“It is estimated that by 2020, the global smart water meter market will exceed $2 billion.” Vivek Mohan, head of the Internet of Things (IoT) business at Semtech Wireless and Sensing, said, “LoRa technology is the proven leader in smart meter applications. Providing an easy-to-scale solution that helps companies optimize operational costs and reduce waste of resources such as water, electricity, and heat.”

In 2018, tens of millions of smart meter solutions based on LoRa technology have been successfully deployed around the world; with the increasing urbanization and the need for higher efficiency, utilities not only need to improve their capabilities, but also need to develop new solutions to optimize the management of existing assets.

Today, hundreds of companies around the world use Semtech’s LoRa technology in their smart metering or utility management solutions. These include IOT LABS, a Spanish IoT company that specializes in LoRa-based solutions, and CRA, a leading provider of LoRa-based IoT solutions for smart cities, smart farms, smart utilities and logistics services. In addition, RicheLink has also developed smart agriculture, smart home and other Internet of Things(IoT) solutions based on LoRa technology.
